Wishing you a slightly belated Happy New Year and hope you all had a lovely holiday season. I enjoyed spending time with family and was nice to have a bit of time off work. Still back to the grindstone now, EDJ has started again and have back to the editing all week.
New Year does tend to a time for reflection and looking back over the last year is actually quite surreal. I had my first book published, as well as signing a contract on another one, finishing a full length off as part of Nano and getting a request on the same one from Harlequin – as well as various other shorts and another full length currently in progress. It’s probably been the most manic year I can remember, with frequent 12 hours days and working most weekends – but it’s also been really rewarding and productive so it’s worth it I think 🙂
For the coming year, well I have another busy time ahead it seems. I’ve already sent in my first submission of the New Year so have fingers and toes crossed for that, and of course that means I’m already back to the obsessive inbox stalking! I have a short story coming out as part of an anthology in March, so I’m very excited to be in with some extremely talented other authors. I’m also hoping to get my first novel finished off (I keep getting distracted from it), two shorter WIPs finished and I have quite a few other ideas floating around just waiting for me to ‘let’ them come out and take over 🙂
So it’s looking quite exciting, watch this space! I hope you all have a wonderful 2013, you achieve everything you aim for and have some fun along the way 🙂
Well, it’s two thirds of the way through November and while I would love to be able to say I’m totally on track for Nano then unfortunately it’s not happening! I had a bit of a dip in motivation, along with a pile of other things to do, last week so got very behind. Am determined will get caught up before the end of the month though, think I managed about 8200 and odd in the last few days so catching up slowly.
I do have an extra bit of motivation now though. I mentioned that I’d sent the first chapter and synposis off to Harlequin publishers for their ‘fast track’ submission. I heard back from them this week and they actually liked it *goes off to do a happy dance* – she said my writing was ‘strong and compelling’, they liked my premise and would be interested in seeing the complete manuscript – which of course means it has to get finished first! 🙂 I’m telling myself quite firmly that it’s a long way off anything concrete, but it is very exciting.
Have been going to the Nano ‘write ins’ every week and have really found them great – I might not get a massive amount of actual writing done at them but it’s nice to be able to meet up with like-minded people and I hope they stay in touch and other things get organised for after this month. Have also discovered a new favourite bookstore – for anyone in the Edinburgh area, it’s called Pulp Fiction and is on Bread Street. Ironically, it’s walkable from my house but had never been in before and it’s great to still see independent bookstores around – not to mention ones with a large fantasy section, a large SEPERATE sci-fi section (those who read the genre will know what a big thing that is these days!) a great cafe with the best cakes and staff who don’t mind their shop being taken over by lots of crazy writing folk 🙂 Reading that back it sounds like I’m being paid to plug them, – honest, no connection apart from popping in!
Anyway, back to the hectic writing schedule! I’ve also just got my pre-edits in for the Service anthology – normally this would be fairly quick and painless but it needs a rewrite and then cut down so is going to take a bit I think. When does it have to be in? 1st December! I’m thinking that sleep is probably overrated anyway 🙂
Hope everyone is doing well – and Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US.
