Wednesday WIP

Published July 13, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Hope your week’s going well. We’re here again at Hump Day and I must admit I’m feeling it a bit this week. Am stuffed full of a cold after getting back from weekend – I’ve obviously been in Scotland too long and lost my immunity to all those evil English germs! Since it’s mid-week though I’m sharing an excerpt from my current WIP – which is Katya and Niko’s story. Hopefully it should be out soon, watch this space! In the meantime, hope you enjoy 🙂

wolves-and-werewolves-fire-and-ice-the-wolf-pack-23828159-240-320Tension thrummed through her, every muscle tightening. Her body screamed at her to run, even though her brain knew there was no chance they could outrun a wolf. This was it. This was how she was going to die. And damn it, it really wasn’t fair. Just when things were finally sort of starting to go right for her, when she’d found some family. Now she would never get the chance to see Naomi again, to hold her child, to get her back. Her parents would have a goddamn field day with this one.

Natalia was trying to gently push her back with one hand, her back straightening as she kept eye contact with the wolf.

“Let’s all just stay calm here,” she said to it. “Don’t do something you’re going to regret.”

Seriously? Her niece was trying to reason with a wild animal that looked like it wanted to eat them. And she’d thought she was losing it.

Stay calm. We need to stall it, Damian is on his way.

Okay, scrap that, she was losing it more. She could have sworn she heard Natalia’s voice inside her head. The woman’s lips hadn’t moved, but her words had been clear as day.

You’re not losing it. Please, just trust me.

Sure, she was dying anyway. Why not go just give in to the madness at this stage? What was it the imaginary Natalia in her head had wanted – stall the vicious wild animal. Made perfect sense, right?

Wolf“Good wolfie, wolfie.” She crooned. “See, you don’t want to hurt us really. We’d make a terrible meal, all gristly and that. Plus, I’m American, everyone knows American food is just the worse. Nothing but junk.” She giggled, an edge of pure panic skating it. Yup, she was going to die a crazy woman – nothing new there. The funny thing was the wolf was actually staring at her as she talked with an expression that on a human would only be described as incredulous. Even the wolf thought she was nuts. She giggled again.

Natalia shot her an anxious glance and went back to her own discussion with the wolf. “Just think about this, Carlos. You know this isn’t going to end well. Please, just walk away now.”

Really? The wolf had a name, and it just happened to be the same as the asshat who’d been bothering her this morning? She was about to comment when a low growl from further down the path drew her attention. Shit, there was a second wolf! They were so screwed. Obviously the wolfie word was getting out that dinner was available here.

Sexy Saturday

Published June 18, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Hope your weekend’s off to a good start! I’ve been having a slightly frazzling week, so glad to reach weekend and have a chance to put my feet up (well , put my feet up with the laptop on my knee at least lol). Since it’s Saturday I’m sharing an excerpt and this is from Scarlett Legacy. Edits on book 2 are coming along well, can’t wait to share with you all. But in the meantime, hope you enjoy this snippet 🙂

WolfDamian’s jaw clenched as he watched her amble through the woods, seemingly lost in her own world and paying no attention to any possible dangers. He lifted his head, breathing in deeply to take in her scent on the drifting breeze. While he’d been expecting a reaction it still hit him like a sucker punch in his gut. His stomach clenched and his body hardened.

His inner beast was already raging at him. The burning need to mark her, to possess her, rising up within like a force of nature but he grit his teeth and forced it down. He was not some undisciplined pup unable to control himself. Years of leading his people had driven into him patience and control above all else.

Instead, he forced himself to stay hidden for now, easily keeping pace with her. She was exactly as he’d always imagined—dark curls flowed down her back and framed delicate features, high cheekbones, and huge dark eyes with thick lashes. Everything about her drew him in, but he’d waited too long to rush things now.

When he’d first sensed her, that indescribable pull that couldn’t be anything else, he’d thought he was going crazy. He’d given up hope long ago, and yet there she was, walking through his woods as though she’d always been meant to be there.

sl rough 4He watched as she paused, looking around her with confusion on her face. She turned in a slow circle, her brow furrowed, and her teeth biting into her lush bottom lip. She was lost, he realized. Well, that was just perfect. His teeth bared in a wicked smile, he could go and “rescue” her. She would think he was Prince Charming when actually he was the big bad wolf.

My Sexy Saturday 11/06/16

Published June 11, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Hope you’re having a good weekend 🙂 I’m joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop today – and this excerpt is from my fairy-tale inspired romance, Scarlett Legacy. Hope you enjoy x

castle5The length of the huge room was lit with glowing candle-bulbs, set in wall scones that seemed to float near the ceiling. Mirrors lined the walls, reflecting and multiplying the dozens of dancing couples. Music from a string ensemble floated on the air, and she smelled the mingling scents of incense and mulled wine. As she stared in complete wonder, feeling like she was in a cross between a fairytale and a regency novel, Sophie nudged her yet again. Really, the woman was getting a little pushy. She’d been quite happy in her own little fairytale imaginings.

When she glanced over, the young woman was gazing at her with amused expectation and nodding toward the bottom of the curved staircase. Natalia’s breath caught in an entirely different way, heat flooding through her. Damian stood at the bottom of the stairs. The only adjective that came to mind was ‘dashing’. He wore a formal tux, the material tailored perfectly to his toned body, the crisp white shirt setting off his tanned skin and the dark unruly hair that just brushed the collar. A glittering pin held his deep red cravat in place. It glowed in the light and looked extremely expensive. The look of utter appreciation that filled his amber eyes as he stared at her made her legs shaky and heat run down her spine.

Her feet didn’t seem to want to move and she needed yet another nudge to start down the long staircase. It seemed to last forever, but then he was taking her hand in his warm one, and somehow the fact that it was still as rough and calloused as it had been in the woods centered her. He smiled at her.

“You look stunning, Natalia. You put every woman here to shame with the light of your beauty.”

She found herself smiling back. From most people, such a compliment would seem contrived or completely over the top, but the complete sincerity in his voice told her he meant every word.

“Thank you,” she murmured. “You clean up pretty good yourself.”

couple“May I?” He gestured toward the dancing couples and she nodded, though not without some trepidation. She hadn’t been lying when she said she wasn’t much of a dancer.

She shouldn’t have worried, since her partner had obviously done this before. He skillfully twirled her around the floor, his arm securely around her waist in case she mis-stepped. Natalia felt as though she was flying, as her feet carried her gracefully around the floor. Her skirts swirled around her, making her feel ridiculously feminine. She could feel the heat of his body, his hand secure in hers, and the sense of rightness only grew. When the song stopped, her cheeks were flushed, but she could have stayed in that moment forever.

What if the fairy tales were not only real, but had it all wrong? Come meet a Big Bad Wolf like you’ve never seen before.

When Natalia rents a holiday cottage she is looking for peace and quiet, a place to reassess her life and recover from her failed relationship. Instead she finds a man who turns her world upside down.

However, people and things are not as they seem, and Natalia begins to find that legends are real and fairy tales have a basis in reality. As she grows closer to the enigmatic Damian she finds herself tested as danger and passion go in hand in hand, and everything she thought she knew about the world will be questioned.

After years of waiting Damian had given up hope that he would ever find his destined mate, and he certainly never expected her to be a sassy American who has no idea that his world even exists. Can he convince Natalia to believe in the impossible, and more importantly, can he protect her from those who seek to destroy his people.

Wednesday WIP

Published June 8, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Here we are on Hump Day 😉 Hope you’re having a good week so far. Mine has been a bit up and down, busy and tiring at work but meeting a friend tonight for a wee catch-up and possibly some cocktails – so can’t complain at that! Since it’s mid-week, I thought I’d share a teaser from my current WIP. This is just going into next round edits now so hopefully should have a release date for you soon. The response from my wonderful beta readers has been awesome so far 🙂 Hope you enjoy!

wolves-and-werewolves-fire-and-ice-the-wolf-pack-23828159-240-320Niko cursed as pain shot through his body. Goddamn it! He hated being helpless. Damian was holding him up on one side, and when he staggered another arm went round his waist and a slight form fitted herself under his arm. He didn’t need to turn to know who it was. He could tell from the scent, floral shampoo, Chanel perfume and something light and earthy that was purely her. This had been a bad idea, the scent was going to get into his house and he’d never get rid of it.

It wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t make his cock twitch every time he caught a fucking whiff of it. If he’d been young and not quite so cynical he would have thought it was the scent of his mate, but then he’d been caught out once before on that. He could only assume it must be because she was related to Iyana. Even thinking her name caused him to flinch and deflated his erection beautifully. Yeah, that must be it. Because she was related to the heartless woman who actually had been his mate, before leaving him without looking back, there must be some kind of genetic chemistry. It was awkward, and definitely uncomfortable, but he would live with it. He had to, there was no other option.

Natalia fussed around them, fluffing up pillows and moving tables back out of his way. With the two others aiding him he managed to collapse into his chair, not quite holding back the grunt of pain as he did so. Damn it, he was weaker than he’d thought. He had been genuinely convinced that the doctor was over-reacting, that a day or two maybe with a nurse and he would be fine on his own. Based on the effort required just to get through the fucking door though, he might have to re-think things.

“Here, take these.” Her soft voice feathered down his spine and it was an effort to get his body under control again. He was seriously not going to be sporting wood in front of the pack leader and his mate.

bfsgraywolf1Looking up she was holding out a glass of water and a handful of tablets. He took the glass gingerly.

“What are they?” He eyed the pills a little suspiciously.

“Pain-killers, which it looks like you need right now, antibiotics to speed up the healing. That’s what you want, right?”

There was a challenge in her eyes, and he grunted crabbily at her, snatching the pills and downing them all with the water. Bratty little girl. If he’d been feeling better he’d have made her pay for that. Ways of doing that flashed into his mind and he bit back the groan that was threatening to rise up. This had been a terrible idea, having her in his house, around him all the time, was pretty much going to amount to torture.

Aww, do we feel sorry for him? 😉 Lol, hope the rest of your week goes well – take care x

A to Z Challenge – M for Mate

Published April 15, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Well, we’re up to M so halfway through the alphabet. I hope you’re enjoying it so far (I know I’m having fun sharing lots of wolfieness with you all lol!) Today we’re talking wolf mates – hey, I am a romance writer after all 😉

wolf coupleUnlike the ‘lone wolf’ pictured in most fairytales, most wolves develop close relationships and strong social bonds. They often demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit.

Once a wolf has found a mate, the male and female usually stay together for life. They are devoted parents and maintain sophisticated family ties.

wolves-loveIt can be tricky writing stories that contain shifters, you want to try and incorporate the ‘animal’ side, but at the same time the relationships, and for me especially the romance side, still need to be relatable to in a human context. The fact that wolves mate for life, and have such strong social groups and family ties makes it easier to combine the wolf and human sides of my shifters. After all, they have the common theme of searching for a partner to spend their life with.

A to Z Challenge – L for Little Red Riding Hood

Published April 14, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Well, we couldn’t really talk about wolves, and in particular my own Big Bad Wolf, without looking at the fairy tale that started it all!

little_red_riding_hood_by_evanira-d64guu7As with most fairy tales the original versions tend to be a lot darker than the one we might be familiar with from our childhoods. The oldest version of the story seems to be from 14th century Italy, there was no red hood is this version, the wolf was actually a werewolf and, as you might expect, there is no ‘happy ending’ – the wolf wins and the girl dies. The moral was supposed to be not to talk/listen to strangers (maybe a little harsh?)

The first written version of the story was by Charles Perrault, who added the red cloak as a symbol of the girl’s sexual maturity, while the wolf was supposed to represent the sexual predator, seducing her off the moral path. It was a cautionary tale, warning young women of the dangers of men. The Brothers Grimm version, that we are probably more familiar with, was take directly from this but they added the ‘happy ending’ of having the woodsman come along to rescue Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother and kill the wolf.

images9This was one of the earliest examples of the wolf being used a symbol of sexual predation, and it still continues to this name in common terms and cliches. For example, a predatory man may be described as a ‘wolf’, while a whistle to indicate that someone is sexy is called a ‘wolf whistle’.

I find the way stories and fairy tales change and are adapted through history fascinating. The core of the story remains, but it is updated and tweaked for the current audience. Little Red Riding Hood is one that has seen numerous versions and adaptations, in novels, movies, television etc. I really enjoyed being able to do my version, and I hope it fits in somewhere:)

My Sexy Saturday 19/03/16

My Sexy Saturday 12/03/16

Published March 12, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

How’s your weekend going? I’ve got a pretty quiet one planned but hopefully that means I’ll get some writing and editing done. Since it’s Saturday, I’m joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop. Today’s excerpt is from my current WIP (so please excuse any mistakes since it hasn’t gone through editing yet!). Hope you enjoy! 🙂

Don’t forget to check out the rest of the great teasers here: http://mysexysaturday.blogspot.co.uk/

God damn, she could just lick that, all of it. He swung round, a snarl lifting his upper lip and she shrank back. When he saw his expression flattened.

“What are you doing here. You should be in bed.”

“I can’t sleep.” She whispered.

“So, you thought you’d wander the house?” A hint of amusement touched his eyes. “Or were you wanting to work out?”

She shook her head. She couldn’t seem to stop her eyes drifting over his pecs, his flat nipples, the light dusting of hair leading down his stomach and disappearing into his pants.

“Katya?”

Her eyes shot to his, a blush rising in her cheeks when she saw knowing amusement mixed with desire.

“I am not a saint. Go back to bed now, or you won’t be going alone.”

Tuesday Teaser

Published March 8, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

How’s your week going? It’s been a gorgeous sunny start to the week here in Scotland (makes a change from snow at the weekend lol). Since it’s Tuesday, I’m sharing a teaser. This is from my current WIP, the second in my wolves series. Hope you enjoy! 🙂

Kat glanced back uneasily.

“Did you hear that?”

“Go faster.” Natalia’s face was set and she gripped Kat’s arm in a vice.

“Is the wildlife round here dangerous?” Kat whispered as they hurried along the tiny trail.

Natalia gave a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob. “You have no idea.”

Well, that was helpful. There was obviously something wrong with her niece today, but the time to discuss it was obviously not while being chased up some kind of vicious beast. Damn, what did they have in this part of the world; bears, cougars? She knew there were wolves from the howling last night. Surely she should have looked into this more before wandering around the woods with no kind of protection.

Natalia was half-dragging her along now, moving with surprising speed. Whatever was following them seemed to be moving faster though, Katya could hear it alongside them now. She pushed her aching limbs to keep moving, while panic caught her breath in her throat. The sounds in the bushes suddenly stopped, the woods eerily silent apart from their crashing footsteps and laboured breaths. Kat was just starting to think maybe whatever the hell it was had bogged off and found something better to stalk, when there was a huge crash through the bushes just ahead of them, and a huge – seriously huge – dark gray wolf was blocking their way.

fierce wolfKat couldn’t stop the shriek that escaped her as the two women stopped in their tracks. The creature’s thick fur was bristling, his head was slightly down with lips curled back over an impressive set of white teeth, and its glowing eyes were fixed on them. For an instant something in those amber eyes seemed familiar, and then the thought was pushed away on a wave of pure panic.

“Oh my God.” She whispered.

This was it. This was how she was going to die. And the uppermost thought was that it wasn’t fair. Just when things were finally sort of starting to go right for her, when she’d found some family. Now she would never get the chance to see Naomi again, to hold her child, to get her back. Her parents would have a damn field day with this one.

Sunday Snippet

Published March 6, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Hope you’re having a good weekend – and for all the wonderful mums in the UK hope you’re having a lovely Mother’s Day. It’s been another changeable day here in Scotland – glorious Spring sunshine in the morning, followed by snow in the afternoon 🙂 It keeps it interesting at least! Since I don’t have a guest author booked in today, I thought I would share with you a snippet from my current WIP. Niko and Katya’s story is coming along nicely. This is the first draft, so please excuse any mistakes. Hope you enjoy 🙂

indexThe wolf howl echoed through the night and Niko gritted his teeth in frustration. He could feel his beast just beneath the surface, roaring to get out. His teeth lengthened and he could feel prickles under his skin. Damn it! He hadn’t shifted since he’d been injured and the need was becoming more and more consuming. He knew he couldn’t, the doctor had been most specific about that and he wasn’t going to risk making his injuries worse. Instead he slowly got out of bed, limped over to the window and flung it open wide. The sounds and smells of the night washed over him and a longing settled into his bones. Damn, he missed running through the wood, the scent of the pines in his nose and the soft dirt beneath his paws.

The wolf howled again, this time a second voice rising up to answer. They were close and Niko felt the growl rising up in his own throat. The soft brush of fur touched his skin and he forced it back. No, he was not some raw pup, he had more control than this. Frustrated, he swung back from the window, cursing when his hip caught the dresser, knocking several items to the floor with a loud crash. Shit! Clumsily he tried to bend down enough to pick up them, but pain shot through him and he cursed again.

A light knock on the door made him start. “Niko?” That soft voice was not what he needed to hear right now, not when he was already struggling with his control.

“What do you want?” He managed to get out.

“Erm, I heard a crash, are you okay?”

“Fine!”

He could hear her light breathing outside the door. She didn’t seem to be going. He cursed under his breath again.

“Come in if you want.”

red and wolfThe door swung open and she was stood there, dressed in flannel pyjamas that really ought to make her look frumpy but for some reason seemed to do the exact opposite. Her eyes shot from the open window to the items scattered across the floor and then locked onto his face.

“Do you want me to get those?” Her voice was soft.

He sighed, he sure as hell wasn’t getting too far with them on his own. He nodded slowly and managed to limp back to the bed, sitting gingerly on the edge. She moved gracefully round the room, picking up things, putting the room back to rights with a few deft touches.

“I’m sorry if I woke you,” he said gruffly.

Those bright hazel eyes shot to his. “I was up anyway. I heard howling. It’s weird, I didn’t know there’d be wolves this close to where people lived.”

A wry smile touched his lips, she had no idea. “Did it frighten you?”

Her brow scrunched. “Not frighten exactly. I’ve never seen wolves in the wild before.”

He grinned at her now. “Would you like to?”

She took a step closer. “What are you talking about? How could we do that?”

blackwolfHe liked the way she said ‘we’. He liked too much about her right now. The cute way her nose wrinkled when she was confused, her scent creeping around every corner of his room, the hint of curves under the ridiculous flannel. A low growl bubbled up, his wolf apparently liked her too. Her eyes widened.

“Did you just growl at me?” An incredulous note was in her voice.

“Why aren’t you running away, Katya?”

She blinked at him. “Should I be?”

“Yes.”
