Guest Author Brantwijn Serrah – Religious Content in Erotic Stories

Published January 3, 2016 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Well, it’s officially 2016. Hope your new year has got off to a good start. I’m thrilled to have the fab Brantwijn Serrah stopping by to talk about the rather interesting subject of religious content in erotic stories. Since I have my own angel-themed story out (though I must admit it’s not as *ahem* steamy as Brantwijn’s 😉 ) it’s something that has occured to me. Although I’m not religious myself, I would never want to offend someone with those beliefs through my stories, so it’s nice to see this kind of take on the subject. Take it away Brantwijn!

Faith and Sex are Not Mutually Exclusive

Brantwijn SerrahAs the title might suggest, Angel’s Keeping is a story involving angels. Fallen angels, at least, and a glimpse into their highly erotic, sex-centered existence. I found myself writing a short novella charged with erotic Sapphic love scenes alongside themes of faith, love, and redemption. I wanted readers to be able to connect with the spiritual themes of the piece…but I also wanted to arouse and inspire them to more fleshly pursuits. Angel’s is meant to be a one-handed read, quite frankly. I hope every person who reads it gets a salacious little thrill.

It might seem hard to reconcile meaningful religious inspiration and graphic lesbian eroticism. I didn’t find it to be so. I’m a highly spiritual person myself, with a Christ-based faith which is very important to me. I’m also bisexual, though, and eroticism, identity, and physical love are also deeply personal to me. They’re as much a part of my values as faith, fellowship, and prayer.

I’m out in various degrees to various people and needless to say, the religious community of my upbringing doesn’t always provide the most nurturing soil. But I’m alright with it. As I said, my faith is Christ-based—not church-based.

When it comes to sexuality and eroticism, I fail to see the correlation between the embrace of a sexual self and a fall from religious grace. I perceive a difference between healthy behavior and not-so-healthy behavior, but not an ostracism from God based on acts of the flesh. In fact I find some of the most basic beauty in sexuality has its own sort of holiness: that we may learn to love and honor our bodies and hearts, valuing the comfort and joy we take in them; that we embrace love and intimacy,

sometimes for others and sometimes for ourselves. To me, one of the most important aspects of both faith and sexuality is to experience love.

The Bible of course has its share of filthy stories and salacious entanglements. Song of Songs, its famous love poem, is full of highly erotic verse: “Your breasts are like two fawns, twin fawns of a gazelle that browse among the lilies” (4:5), “Take me away with you, let us hurry! Let the king bring me to his chambers” (1:4), and my personal favorite, “Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste” (2:3). One of the loveliest testaments to emotional and physical love, sensuous and erotic, directly out of the Good Book.

Does sex always have to be about love? No, of course not, or at least, not romantic love between parties. There’s a sanctity in sexuality stemming from a love of oneself, too. It includes discovering and loving who we are, celebrating our choices, differences, passions, and hopes.

There’s an intrinsic vulnerability and trust in sexual awakening and erotic discovery. I find my own sexuality to be one of my most spiritual qualities. It fits in just fine with my views of religious faith, as my strongest religious belief is in the commandment to love one another. I don’t mean to equate sex as a path to salvation (though for some, maybe it is). What I do mean is, Christian faith in my eyes all comes down to love, compassion, and fellowship. Each is also an intrinsic component in healthy sexuality. I see more commonality than conflict.

Angel’s Keeping is definitely an erotic story. Yet it takes place on Christmas. A fallen angel finds herself in church at holy Mass. A plan to corrupt another with sexual sin becomes a journey to recognizing love, forgiveness, and salvation.

No, I don’t think faith and eroticism are mutually exclusive. I think they make a pretty powerful pair.

And if you’d like to know more about Angel’s Keeping…

Angel's Keeping Cover SmBlurb

Even fallen angels can wish for a miracle.

As a succubus, preying on humans is Raschael’s business, and mortal feelings are nothing but a waste of time. So maybe her king meant to punish her when he sent her out to hunt on one of the most holy mortal holidays. Or maybe he just wanted her far, far away, so he could banish Raschael’s one and only friend.

Now Raschael must track down a missing fallen angel, and she doesn’t have a clue where to start. Bigger predators are closing in, and Rasche’s only lead is a Christmas stripper named Noelle.

Tuesday Teaser

Published December 29, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Well, Christmas might be over but the house is still full of food, the decorations are still up, and I’m still getting through the xmassy reads, so thought would share one final teaser from my Christmas story before it gets put away for the year lol. Hope you enjoy  🙂

Angel 600x400A few hours later Daniel stood in his normally tidy, minimalist living room that currently looked like a Christmas-themed explosion had taken place. “A few decorations” seemed to have turned into a tree that almost brushed the ceiling that Laurel and Rachel were trimming with tinsel and what looked like an infinite amount of shiny baubles.

He’d never really done the whole Christmas thing. When he was a kid his mother had never been too interested. There’d seemed little point when he was on his own and God knows Karen had never cared about anything like that. He gazed at Laurel balancing on a step ladder to reach the top of the tree and leaning down to ask Rachel her opinion on which ornaments should go where. She always included the child in everything, and he realized she always included him too. Laurel threw herself into everything; a complete contrast to the bored dates he normally dealt with who would rather die then show the least bit of enthusiasm for anything. It was like a breath of fresh air blowing through the house.

She looked over as though she felt his gaze on her and smiled at him. Her eyes sparkled as she gestured him over. “I think we need a second opinion here. Should the star or the angel go on the top of the tree?”

He grinned at her. “Definitely the angel. What do you think, Rachel?”

The little girl nodded energetically. “That’s what I said, Daddy, but Laurel doesn’t think it looks like a real angel.”

Daniel laughed, and looked over at Laurel, surprised to see she looked nervous. She must be thinking about the argument her first night, when I’d told her not to let Rachel believe in angels. I was definitely a bit of an ass. Rachel was only a little girl, she would figure the truth out eventually. God knows there were worse things to believe in. He smiled at her, trying to think of something to say to let her know he regretted it now.

“So, what does a real angel look like then?” he tried teasingly.

If anything the look had now changed to panic, and Rachel piped up from below.

“Like Laurel, of course, Daddy. She’s a real angel.”

Tuesday Teaser

Published December 22, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

First of all, it’s Winter Solstice, so wishing you all a Happy Yule 🙂 It’s the longest day of the year here, so after tonight we can the nights will get lighter and spring will be coming.

happy-yule-ch

It’s also the last working day for me before Christmas – woot! Hope you’re having a good week – I’ve been catching up on some festive reading, and I’ll be sharing some of my favourites here tomorrow! For now, it’s Tuesday so that means I’m sharing a teaser, and it’s from my own festive read, An Angel for the Tree. Hope you enjoy 🙂

Angel 600x400Laurel’s eyes filled with tears and, without thinking, she pulled him down to her and wrapped her arms round him. “You are not a bad person, Daniel. Just someone who bad things have happened to them. You didn’t deserve it.”

For a long moment they just stood there, and she could feel the warmth of his body pressed against her as her arms held him to her. He slid his arms round her, pulling her closer. She brushed her fingers over the bare skin at the nape of his neck, feeling a mix of desire and tenderness.

He sank his fingers into the hair at the back of her neck and tilted her head up. Her vision was still slightly blurry, but she saw his eyes widen as he met her gaze. He gently cupped her face in his hands and carefully wiped away the tears with his thumbs.

“I don’t think anyone has ever cried for me before in my life.”

Her heart clenched. He lowered his head to softly brush her lips with his, before lightly dropping kisses at the corner of her mouth, up her cheek, across her still damp eyes and then back to her lips. This time she pulled him down to her, deepening the kiss and revelling in the groan he gave against her lips. He tilted her head back so he could plunge his tongue deeper, and she moaned, liquid fire running through her veins.

Some faraway part of her brain was saying that this was a really bad idea, but the rest of her was lost in the feeling of his lips on hers, the heat of his body crushed against her. She’d never understood human emotions before, hadn’t realized how all consuming they could be. It was more then desire, she felt an overwhelming need to wrap him up and protect him from a world that had been so cruel to him. It was a ridiculous thought when he towered over her but she couldn’t push it away.

Monday Catch Up

Published December 21, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

b3fca9a30c442b282bb9b27967ea120eWell, it’s Monday again, but it’s the Monday before Christmas so surely that means it’s not too bad? Are you all getting in a festive mood? I must admit I’ll feel a little more Christmassy when I’m done with the day job, but have been binging on xmassy reads and movies so am getting there slowly 🙂

Have had a nice relaxed weekend for a change. Saw the new Star Wars on Saturday – I’m not going to give any spoilers, but I enjoyed it. I don’t know if I would rave about it like I’ve seen some people doing, but thought it was a good start to the ‘reboot’ and some lovely moments that made my inner geek go squee! Yesterday visited some friends for a festive crafting afternoon, complete with lots and lots of yummy festive baking. I’m a terrible cook myself, so am lucky I have friends who are amazing in the kitchen 🙂 (and happy to share!)

So writing-wise, I must admit it’s been a little quiet. Still not 100% health-wise so am trying to take it easy. Have been doing a little promo for my xmassy release (so check it out if you haven’t already, lol!) but other than that, just getting ready for Christmas and making some plans for the New Year (but probably more on that later). Hope you’re all having a good start to the week, and aren’t getting too stressed with festive preparations.

Take care x

My Sexy Saturday 19/12/15

Published December 19, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

It’s Saturday and I’m excited because I’m off to see the new Star Wars today! Fingers crossed it will be good 🙂 In the meantime though, I’m happy to be joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop. The theme this week is Holidays, so I’m sharing an excerpt from my Christmas story, An Angel for the Tree. Hope you enjoy – and don’t forget to check out the other blogs here: http://mysexysaturday.blogspot.co.uk/

Angel 600x400Rachel was tugging on his hand again, seemingly oblivious to the adults interaction. “Daddy, come make a snow angel with me, Laurel was showing me how.”

He stared down at her, completely out of his depth. “Erm, I should probably go back inside.”

Her lower lip jutted out. “Ple-ase, Daddy. I can show you how to do really good ones.”

Yeah, he wasn’t going to win on this, and he let her drag him across to a wide patch of clear snow.

“Wait a second.” Laurel called out behind him. She pulled the woolly hat off her head and handed it to him. “You’ll catch cold without a hat on.”

Daniel stared in it confusion and laughing she stepped over and pulled it down over his ears.

“How can you live out here and not have a woolly hat?”

For a moment he just stared at her dumbly. He could smell the scent of her hair on the silly woolly thing and for a moment her fingers lingered, lightly brushing his hair back where it settled, before she seemed to catch herself and pull back. There was an odd warmth running through him, despite the snow falling around him.

Christmas Release Day – An Angel for the Tree

Published December 16, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Well, it’s a little later than I was originally planning, but I’m really excited that An Angel for the Tree has re-released today. I love Christmassy stories, and I hope you do too 🙂 This has a grumpy scrooge-like single dad and a beautiful angel who is sent to help him and his daughter – but ends up getting much more involved than she expected! This is a story that’s very close to my heart, so I really hope you check it – and enjoy!

Angel 600x400Blurb

Daniel is a modern day Scrooge, but when a beautiful angel shows up on his doorstep can he believe in a Christmas miracle?

Daniel Everett is having a bad day. Firstly, it’s almost Christmas and he’s convinced Scrooge had the right idea in the first place, secondly his latest nanny has left him to cope alone with his five year old daughter – and quite frankly he would rather deal with several cut-throat mergers before breakfast than one small child.

When the beautiful Laurel shows up on his doorstep she’s a gift from heaven – literally! Unbeknown to him, Laurel is a real life angel and his carefully ordered life is about to be turned upside down as she’s determined to help Daniel feel again and to reconnect with his daughter.

What neither of them bank on is the sparks that fly between them.
As Laurel starts to thaw Daniel’s icy exterior, can he learn to trust again and start to believe in the impossible – and can they ever overcome the obstacles of coming from two separate worlds?

Tuesday Teaser

Published December 15, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Well, it’s Tuesday so hope your week is off to a good start! I’m sharing a teaser from my Christmas themed story – which should be out tomorrow (hopefully I can get all the formatting finished inbetween my painkillers lol!). In the meantime though, hope you enjoy 🙂

39081b496fed446ac35596f14f8b765f

His expression turned incredulous. “Are you seriously telling me that you’re a grown woman and you actually believe angels are real?”

She lifted her chin and met his gaze defiantly. “I know they are.”

He actually snorted then. “Trust me to get a crazy nanny. I don’t suppose you have some proof of that you’d like to share?”

Laurel smiled. “Angels don’t work on proof. They work on faith.”

“Dear God.” He rolled his eyes and stood up to pace the room. He stopped next to the chair, and loomed over her. “Whatever crazy notions you may have in your head are your problem, but I do not want you trying to make my daughter believe them too.”

Anger surged through her. Before she realized what she was doing she’d pushed back the chair and was glaring up at him. Really, this man was impossible! “I am not crazy and neither are my notions. I would never try to make anyone believe anything. Rachel will know what is right in her heart.”

He glared at her and his hands went to her shoulders, almost as though he was going to shake her. Instead he abruptly froze, his thumbs rubbing against her bare arms, and Laurel found an entirely different emotion running through her.

He slowly lowered his head to hers, giving her plenty of time to move away. Her body seemed incapable of moving, a deer caught in the headlights. His lips brushed hers and all conscious thought seemed to drop away.

Hi all,

Hope you’re having a great weekend. I’m joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop today, and since we’re now less than 2 weeks until Christmas, it seemed appropriate to share an excerpt from a Christmas-themed story, An Angel for the Tree. I was hoping to have this re-released this week but due to illness I’m running a little behind. It should def be up early next week – and in the meantime – hope you enjoy this teaser! 🙂

Tuesday Teaser

Published December 8, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Sorry I missed the usual post yesterday, am a little under the weather this week, but hopefully can plod through 🙂 Anyway, it’s Tuesday so let’s have a teaser. This is from my Christmas themed novella, which should be getting re-released either this week or early next. I think edits are all done so just need to tweak a new cover! Hope you enjoy x

39081b496fed446ac35596f14f8b765fLaurel stood in the middle of the snowy street. Crowds of people jostled and pushed each other along, yet they parted around her, some glancing over at her with perplexed looks while others looked right through her. She wore a thick winter coat for appearances, but she hadn’t bothered buttoning it. The snow would melt before it touched her anyway. Right now she was frowning as her gaze intently followed the figure of a tall, broad shouldered man making his way through the crowds.

This man parted the crowds in a different way, as though people realized from the set mouth and the loping stride that it was move or be moved. In fact, if someone was too slow to move in time he seemed to relish jostling past them with muttered curses about the “bloody season.” When a group of carollers started singing just ahead of him, the look he shot at them made one of the women actually shriek and draw back.

Laurel followed him, keeping pacing easily down the busy street, and paused as he entered a toy store. She watched through the window as for the first time he looked slightly bemused, inspecting various large dolls, before abruptly shrugging and picking up one with dark curling hair and thick-lashed eyes. He emerged back into the snow, juggling the large package and cursing some more at Santa’s elves from the grotto down the street before stalking through the center to the car park.

The woman paused, tilting her head and a disturbance in the air next to her dissolved into the form of a tall, blond haired man wearing a long robe.

“Jeremiah.” She bowed her head respectfully towards him. Jeremiah was senior to her in rank, but more then that he had always been loyal and supportive when she needed it. She knew he didn’t approve of what she was doing, so the fact that he had shown up anyway proved that more then ever.

“You have not rethought things then?”

She shook her head. “This would not have been offered to me if it was impossible.”

“Nothing is impossible, as we know more than most, but this man is perhaps one of the closest cases I’ve seen. He has no compassion left, no goodwill. Do not waste your time on him, Laurel.”

Monday Catch Up

Published November 16, 2015 by shellirosewarne

Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of posting over the weekend. My laptop still isn’t fixed and now my network cable for my desktop computer in on the blink so have had very little internet over the past few days. Yup, technology hates me and nope, I’m not coping well 😉 Still, at least I had a friend visiting so managed to have a nice catchup and not sit around moaning.

Well, up until all my computery things had a wobble it was quite a productive week. As you probably saw, I’ve released a new anthology last week (if not, please do check it out, all proceeds to charity), and have managed to do a repolish on a Christmas story that I’m wanting to re-release soon. I’m also writing a shiny new one to go with it (though admittedly that’s now going a little slower without the laptop lol). They’re both angel-themed, which is a bit of a change of pace for me from necromancers, witches and shifters, but I’m enjoying it.

I’m also hoping to have the free read prequel for Love Reawakened up very soon, just waiting on it coming back from a final checkover and then I have the cover and everything all ready to go. I know, I know, it’s taken ages – fingers crossed it’ll be worth it!

Anyway, if the posting this week is a little hit and miss, I apologise, and hopefully normal services will resume soon 🙂

Have a good Monday x
