Well, it’s two thirds of the way through November and while I would love to be able to say I’m totally on track for Nano then unfortunately it’s not happening! I had a bit of a dip in motivation, along with a pile of other things to do, last week so got very behind. Am determined will get caught up before the end of the month though, think I managed about 8200 and odd in the last few days so catching up slowly.
I do have an extra bit of motivation now though. I mentioned that I’d sent the first chapter and synposis off to Harlequin publishers for their ‘fast track’ submission. I heard back from them this week and they actually liked it *goes off to do a happy dance* – she said my writing was ‘strong and compelling’, they liked my premise and would be interested in seeing the complete manuscript – which of course means it has to get finished first! 🙂 I’m telling myself quite firmly that it’s a long way off anything concrete, but it is very exciting.
Have been going to the Nano ‘write ins’ every week and have really found them great – I might not get a massive amount of actual writing done at them but it’s nice to be able to meet up with like-minded people and I hope they stay in touch and other things get organised for after this month. Have also discovered a new favourite bookstore – for anyone in the Edinburgh area, it’s called Pulp Fiction and is on Bread Street. Ironically, it’s walkable from my house but had never been in before and it’s great to still see independent bookstores around – not to mention ones with a large fantasy section, a large SEPERATE sci-fi section (those who read the genre will know what a big thing that is these days!) a great cafe with the best cakes and staff who don’t mind their shop being taken over by lots of crazy writing folk 🙂 Reading that back it sounds like I’m being paid to plug them, – honest, no connection apart from popping in!
Anyway, back to the hectic writing schedule! I’ve also just got my pre-edits in for the Service anthology – normally this would be fairly quick and painless but it needs a rewrite and then cut down so is going to take a bit I think. When does it have to be in? 1st December! I’m thinking that sleep is probably overrated anyway 🙂
Hope everyone is doing well – and Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US.
Have a bad feeling I may be getting a bug – been feeling a bit under the weather the last few days and yesterday just got home from work and went to bed. Unfortunately that meant I woke up about 1am and couldn’t get back to sleep again so that’s probably not helping today! I did wake up though to a rather nice email inbox – my official contract for my submission in the Breathless Press Serviced Anthology and the final line edits for An Angel for the Tree. There doesn’t seem to be much so hopefully can get them done and sent back tonight.
Have been thinking about promotion for it – as I probably mentioned earlier – so it’s given me the kick I needed to sign up to all the places I’ve been putting off! So, I’m now on Twitter, Goodreads, in the process of doing Google+ and, as the observant followers may have noticed, there are now shiny buttons down the side of this page to connect them all together (well hopefully!) as well as a new page with details of my books and links to follow when they go live. Will update some more on the current WIPs later. I’m feeling rather proud of myself 🙂 As some of you probably know, I have a love/hate relationship with technology – well, actually it’s more like I love it but it hates me! So, be prepared for a week of moaning while I try to figure everything out – complete with questions on how to do the most basic of tasks imaginable (bear in mind that I’ve probably been struggling for hours at this point so if you do want to point out the 10 second, ridiculously easy way to do it then I promise I will come back and thank you when I’ve stopped swearing at the machine).
Anyway, the plan for when I finish work is to dose up on juice, vitamins and any medicines I may have lying round (what could go wrong there?), get the edits finished and hopefully get back on track with my Nano. I don’t have time to be ill 😛
So, November has been a bit manic so far – nothing new there, of course! National Novel Writing Month is actually going quite well, after a few shaky days last week am back up to word count and hoping to hit 20k today 🙂 While I might be getting a little frazzled trying to fit it around everything else then I am loving the community feel of it. The forums and facebook groups are so supportive and am really enjoying the ‘write in’ sessions – it’s nice to get a chance to meet up with other equally crazy people who are going through the same thing 🙂
In other news, got the release date through for my Christmas story, An Angel for the Tree – it’s going to be the 14th December. Not long off now and it’s starting to feel very real! I’m still excited but must admit the nerves are also creeping in – what if no one buys it, eep!! I’m starting to look into what promotion I can do for it – so if anyone has any ideas then please feel free to say as I’ve never done anything like this before and to be honest it is a little daunting.
